Project Overview
The Shenhua Beidian spherical coal-storage project is located on the northern outskirts of Xilinhot. It was developed as a covered bulk-storage structure for an open-pit coal mine storage yard.
The project uses a large spherical steel space frame. Dunbon's engineering records list a space-frame height of approximately 32 metres and a dome base diameter of about 86 metres, creating the wide covered volume required for coal storage and material handling.
| Project | Shenhua Beidian Spherical Coal Storage Space Frame |
| Location | Northern outskirts of Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia, China |
| Application | Covered coal storage for an open-pit mine |
| Structural System | Spherical steel space frame |
| Space-Frame Height | Approximately 32 m |
| Dome Base Diameter | Approximately 86 m |
| Owner Sector | Central state-owned enterprise |

Structural Characteristics
A spherical space frame is well suited to bulk-material storage because it provides a large clear span with an efficient three-dimensional load path. The curved grid encloses the storage area while limiting the need for internal columns that could interfere with stockpiling and material movement.
The project photograph also shows the relationship between the dome, the central transfer tower and the elevated conveyor bridge. Coordinating these systems is important for maintaining equipment access and connecting material-handling routes with the covered storage building.

Project Value
This case demonstrates experience with large industrial space frames used for coal, ore and other bulk-material storage. The same structural approach can support covered stockyards where long spans, weather protection and compatibility with conveyor systems are key project requirements.
